How to handle rec play after academy?
After hosting a clinic or Dynamite Academy, there’s one question that always comes up: How can I apply the skills I’m learning in my recreational games when my partners aren’t practicing those shots or strategies and I’m worried about letting them down?
This is a valid concern because when we’re trying to master a new shot, like the 3rd shot drop or resetting in the kitchen, we’re bound to make mistakes.
On recreational courts, the mentality is often just to get the ball over, which can clash with our efforts to improve our game. Our partners may not be supportive as they risk losing points or games while we work on these new shots or strategies.
Here are some tips for navigating recreational play:
1. Set your intentions for your game before arriving at the courts. Knowing your goals will help you accept that you may miss shots while trying to improve.
2. Choose partners who will support your intentions. In recreational play, you have the freedom to select your own partners.
3. Ask your partner about their intentions before starting the game. This sets a positive tone for a learning experience.
4. If your partner shares their intentions, it shows they are open to hearing yours as well.
Ultimately, if none of these strategies work, you may have to come to terms with losing games and dealing with unhappy partners as you work on your shots. You’ll need to decide whether you prioritize improving your game despite the discomfort of recreational play, or if you’re content with where your game currently stands to maintain the approval of others.
